The K2M team partnered with HOK and the FDOC to program and design a new Mental Health inpatient treatment facility within the Lake Correctional Institution. Functioning as the statewide center, at approximately 275,000 square feet the inpatient component will serve a population of 550 patients, including a 30 bed infirmary, as well as constructing and renovating core support functions of the existing LCI facility to better meet the new needs. Along with the residential treatment units, additional programs, visitation, clinic spaces, food service, laundry, and maintenance needs are included in the new facility to serve the patients in a holistic matter from dietary needs to individual medical needs.
One of the main guiding concepts in both the design and the operations of the facility was to provide trauma informed care. Being able to provide the physical and emotional safety of the patients is at the forefront of the design. The first approach in this concept was to utilize direct supervision management. This management model places the staff and patients together allowing for direct care and communication. In addition, treatment spaces are added on the unit to reduce movement of patients and staff throughout the facility.
