Key West Botanical Garden

K2M Design has developed a comprehensive replacement educational building for the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden, addressing crucial infrastructural challenges while enhancing the organization’s educational mission. The existing facility had fallen into disrepair, necessitating a new, resilient structure capable of withstanding the coastal Florida environment.

The new elevated building features a classroom and science lab designed to accommodate up to 30 students, along with four office spaces, storage areas, and a library. It prioritizes sustainability with the incorporation of LED lighting, solar panels, a 25,000-gallon cistern, and energy-efficient materials. Importantly, the building connects to a separate restroom facility via a covered, elevated boardwalk, maintaining aesthetic harmony with existing structures through matching green metal standing-seam roofing.
This project took into account the need for connectivity to future site developments, including a planned visitor center and dormitory, while integrating seamlessly with the garden’s natural ecosystem and existing pathway networks. Rigorous planning ensured compliance with elevation requirements for flood protection, all while maintaining accessibility and minimizing disruption in an environmentally sensitive setting.
