The City of Decatur engaged the K2M+DS team to evaluate potential sites for a new fire station and conduct a feasibility study. Using CAD and demographic data overlays within ESRI’s GIS software, we performed a response time analysis to identify the optimal location. The city ultimately selected a centrally located park adjacent to State Highway 27 for further study.

A collaborative visioning session helped align the station’s design with the Decatur Fire Department’s operational needs, safety requirements, and community aesthetics. Key objectives included optimizing functionality, fostering a sense of community, using durable, low-maintenance materials, and creating a healthy work environment.

The proposed 21,275 SF facility features five drive-through bays, centrally located support spaces—including turnout storage, decontamination, and tool rooms—and a hose tower/training tower with exterior access and rigging points for extrication training.

Adjacent to a safety village where schoolchildren receive safety training, the station will include a classroom to support this initiative. Firefighter living quarters are designed for privacy and comfort, following the Zone Design concept. The exterior blends brick and metal panels, with a brick façade on the street-facing sides to complement the surrounding neighborhood.
