Charlotte Douglas International Airport: East Terminal Expansion Phase I

The team designed what was arguably one of the most complicated insertions of new terminal and concourse areas into the convergence of at least five distinct construction phases at CLT Airport on a site with documented and undocumented utilities. Designed in two phases, the ultimate result is new 3-story East Terminal building, housing new TSA office space above Ticket Level, New security Checkpoint E, expansion of the Federal Inspection Services (FIS) area in the Customs area on the Baggage Level. The difficult but strategic capturing of this area has greatly improved Checkpoint, Customs/Inspections capacity and customer service to both domestic and foreign passengers; inbound, outbound and transferring.

This 88,000 square foot addition (including penthouse) incorporated new Checkpoint security and surveillance equipment, telecom and IT systems, FIS Bag Claim and Recheck, BHS, and modifications and improvements to surrounding building systems and components. A new third level of offices was constructed along the north side of the Concourse D Connector, complete with views into the terminal below and daylighting from the exquisitely crafted curtain wall along the north façade.

Despite the land-locked footprint, the double-height Checkpoint and queuing space is quite spacious and filled with natural daylight. The Design Team avoided the need for unsightly fire-rated separations between old and new spaces by satisfying local Code Enforcement with advanced smoke modeling to demonstrate adequate fire safety without the traditional unsightly separation methods. This project was designed and built to accommodate daily operations during the entire process.
